At I Am An Author, we have done extensive research in designing our books to develop reading skills in kids. Our stories for each reading level aim at inculcating a love for reading in our young audience. All our books are printed in reader-friendly font to make reading a pleasure for our readers.
Given below are the stages of reading based on which our books are categorized. Although we have provided an age to go with each of the categories, this is merely suggestive. Every child is unique. Some kids pick up reading skills as early as 2 years, and some at 12 years. Unless and until a kid is comfortable in one stage, do not force them to the next. Let them take their time and get comfortable reading, because that’s the only way they are going to enjoy books and the magical world that books can transport them to.
Reading can shape a child’s personality and give them the confidence to face situations they may not have experienced in their lives. It is common belief that videos are far more engaging for kids. However, reading can trigger imagination that videos cannot. A simple scene like “Deep in a forest …” can be imagined in a million ways when it is read in a book. However, it can only be visualized the way it is shown in the video if it were to be simply watched.
We welcome feedback from parents and we will improve our books based on invaluable feedback from you and your kids. Our readers are our leaders.
STAGES OF READING DEVELOPMENT
STAGE 0: THE PRE-READER SERIES
(TYPICALLY FROM 6 MONTHS TO 6 YEARS OF AGE)
Books in this category are for those kids who have just started to learn to read. These books are filled with pictures and simple words. Pre-readers need assistance from adults so that they do not get frustrated with the reading activity.
STAGE 1: THE EARLY READER
(TYPICALLY FROM 3 TO 7 YEARS OF AGE)
In our opinion, this stage is the most important as this stage shapes the child’s perception about books. Our Early Reader Series books are short stories in interesting titles to arouse curiosity in the child. The tales are short enough to not bore them and full of colourful illustrations to help in comprehension.
STAGE 2: THE PROGRESSIVE READER
(TYPICALLY FROM 7 TO 9 YEARS OF AGE)
During this stage, children are beginning to read with increasing fluency. The Progressive Reader Series books are designed keeping this in mind but incorporating pictures to break the monotony of plain text. Children’s attention spans at this stage are slightly more and our stories are a bit longer than the Early Reader books to aid in developing the attention span further.
STAGE 3: THE FLUENT READER
(TYPICALLY FROM 9 TO 15 YEARS OF AGE)
During this phase of the reading development process, reading is used to gain new knowledge, to experience new feelings, to acquire new attitudes and to explore issues from multiple perspectives. Readers get accustomed to reading text-filled books. However, to keep kids engaged in books in a fully digital world, our Fluent Reader Series books cover a range of topics and include not just fiction, thriller and drama but also books that satisfy the urge to acquire knowledge that is not academics related.
STAGE 4: THE EXPERT READER
(TYPICALLY 16 YEARS AND OLDER)
The Expert Reader Series books broadly cover all disciplines, including the physical, biological and social sciences as well as the humanities, politics and current affairs. At this stage, readers are clear in what they seek from the books they choose.
